Airport Infrastructure Obstacles & Challenges
Airports in the U.S. range in sizes and most are over 1.0 million square foot terminals with multiple concourses and over 100 gates with the ability to accommodate 100+ aircraft. Airfields incorporate miles of cabling throughout the pathways and conduits that support the airport’s infrastructure for communication and connectivity. Additionally, the airport leases space to a myriad of agencies such as the FBI, FAA, and TSA.
The challenge for the cabling optimization and security falls squarely on the Airport’s Infrastructure Team. The information/communication pathways for the myriad of devices served through fiber optics pass through the overhead trays, in the wall conduits and pathways as well as the conduits carrying the miles of cable between buildings, concourse terminals, and tower.
Airports are cognizant of the importance of future-proofing the pathways as much as possible. To do that meant the use of the smallest outer diameter fiber optic jacket that will allow room for future cabling without disturbing existing fiber.
Most importantly, fiber optics are made of glass that can be prone to cracking and breaking. Fiber optic failure from a myriad of stress to the cable such as bending, crimping, stretching, twisting, tangling, as well as weather, weight, or vermin chewing on the cable will compromise the integrity of the bandwidth and signal to the devices. Failure of the fiber network is not an option.
The Airport Fiber Goals & Objectives
Generally speaking, the airport’s objective in expansion or reclamation is to utilize the latest technologies from security, data centers, DAS, Wi-Fi, digital signage as well as some special amenities such as high tech chairs in the passenger waiting for areas and designed for comfort. Other key features are the multiple UBS ports and standard power outlets for charging phones, tablets, and laptops. The airport no longer uses the time-limited Wi-Fi service and moved to an unlimited service while eliminating a mandatory preliminary video clip. The airport objective is to source a fiber optic solution that will meet the needs of the smallest outer diameter and can meet all required specifications and external conditions from Riser, Plenum, Indoor/Outdoor, LSZH, Direct Burial, Industrial and Harsh Environments as well as added water block for underground conduits when necessary.
nanoFIBER™ Product Concept
Point 2 Point’s newly CPR Certified LSZH Stainless Steel Armored nanoFIBER™ fiber optic cables provide the safest and secure armored cable solution in aviation the market today. The U.S. Patent Pending. U.L. approved small outer diameter (OD) high flex armor protects the fragile glass and the CPR rated LSZH jacket protects the environment. The nanoFIBER™ fiber optic cable provides the airport with the smallest outer diameter (OD) secure cable that is crush resistant, hard to cut through and safest for humans in a fire scenario at the airport. Projects include NYC and Charlotte to name a few.
The stainless-steel armored cable is impervious to harsh weather and ideal for indoor and outdoor environments at the airport. When pulling the nanoFIBER™ throughout aviation security and building management systems, the cable takes up minimal space and simplifies installation.
nanoFIBER™ has the highest-level EU B2 certification for low smoke zero halogen outer jacket that provides the best security to protect life in case of a fire at the airport or in a plane.
User Friendliness
Point 2 Point nanoFIBER™ is 65% smaller in size and 75% lighter than standard Aluminum Interlock Armor (AIA) and easy to install as a one-man project. A standard 1000-foot 12 strand spool of AIA can weigh 395lbs and has a 13.9mm outer diameter versus nanoFIBER™ that weighs 99lbs and has only a 5.5mm outer diameter. The added toughness and strength of the nanoFIBER™ makes pushing and or pulling the nanoFIBER™ through conduits, aerials, or even under the ground a time-saving and user-friendly solution.
The armored fiber cables can be housed as a single strand for airport digital signage to building management systems (BMS) as well as multiple strands of up to 144 strands or more to support all aviation security needs and projects.
The nanoFIBER™ Hybrid Fiber + Power solution allows the installer to run our armored fiber optics and power to cameras in a single jacket that saves time, space, and costs at the airport.
Available in a variety of glass types and strand counts, the fiber component is designed as needed. The “Power Cables” can be 2, 3, or 4 conductors with 12 AWG to 22 AWG options. The basic construction is two (2) strands of Singlemode Fiber with 18 AWG/2 conductors all under one (1) outdoor jacket. |
Quality
nanoFIBER™ is manufactured to be the best in quality armored fiber optic cable in the world. The stainless-steel armor is machine wound around the fiber optic strands to tremendous strength, ruggedness, and bendability for all practical airport projects and uses. Additionally, Kevlar® strands are added to reinforce the strength. Water block yarn is added for use in outdoor applications. nanoFIBER™ patch cords are half the size and substantially stronger than conventional jumpers.
The nanoFIBER™ is easy to splice and faster to terminate for custom solutions versus standard AIA. Since the OD is the same as non-armored fiber cable sizes, nanoFIBER™ is a perfect replacement for all your fiber needs.
The Limited Lifetime Warranty (see warranty guidelines) against rodent attack and manufacturing defect will add assurance based on our high-quality engineering and manufacturing.
Interoperability
nanoFIBER™ is designed to protect the Corning ClearCurve™ & InfiniCore™ Glass as a standard with universal usage. The smallest armor OD and very high flexibility allow for easy installations into tight paths and bends. The fibers include OS2, OM1, OM3, OM4, and OM5 from 1 to 144 Strands (250u/900u/Ribbon) to meet all needs and airport projects. The Multi-strand pre-termination is available with MTP/MPO, LC, SC, ST, MU, etc. to meet all marketable needs. The Jackets are available for Riser, Plenum, Indoor/Outdoor, LSZH EU Certified B2 level, Direct Burial, Industrial, as well as Harsh Environments. The patch cords can be prepared to meet all needs and lengths for standard or custom projects. Lastly, nanoFIBER™ is designed to lower the installation costs of support systems, pathways, shipping costs, and manpower labor hours from the current bulky AIA fiber.
Design
nanoFIBER™ is designed by Roman Krawczyk, CEO of P2P that is a UL-approved solution that adds strength, ruggedness and reduces bend radius to existing fiber optic cables. nanoFIBER™ can be a mainstream airport product based on its new category and design that offers the attributes of armored fiber with the same OD as basic fiber optic cables.
nanoFIBER™ is a leading cable manufacturer of the best-armored fiber cable with the highest level LSZH EU CPR certifications for permanent airport building structures, aircraft, or any structures that house dense populations. nanoFIBER™ has passed stringent EU testing for fire and awarded the high-level B2 certification.
Cables incorporated as a permanent part of the building construction need to be constructed and tested in accordance with CPR and based on smoke production, flaming droplets, and acidity. Europe has set the highest standard for the installation of fiber and nanoFIBER™ can be specified in any project with this certification as best-in-class cabling.
Market Opportunity
Airport Security systems cannot afford downtime due to faulty cables, vermin attacks, crimping, and breaking, etc. The opportunities to use nanoFIBER™ in projects are almost infinite.
